Gail Daldy was born in Chilliwack, British Columbia on the West Coast of Canada before settling on Bowen Island just off the mainland of Vancouver with her husband Allan and their son Chance. For over 40 years she has enjoyed a career in the music and film industry servicing First Nations and Inuit people across Northern Canada with their favorite music and movies. As a young woman she travelled abroad experiencing different cultures and everyday living in numerous countries.

From this she realized that children are similar the world over and can easily learn from each other and from the simple things that surround them. She believes that this collection of chance photographs captures many of these everyday life lessons and illustrates them in a fun and easy to understand way.

To say “A picture is worth 1000 words” seems so cliché while at the same time appropriate in pointing out the obvious in the Learn By Chance book series. As seen through the eyes of one little boy a growing visual interactive experience of a child learning simple life lessons that can be shared with children all over the world.

Seeing and reading about his adventures as they happen creates a great conversation opener for parents giving them an opportunity to talk about similar enjoyable moments and lessons learned with their own children.

*Disclaimer: Regarding the Cover Photo for Book I, in no way do we endorse reading books in the bathroom. We understand this is a common practice for many people however in our case it was a one of situation. At the time I believe Chance simply felt a bit too exposed and after a minute or two he said to me, “Mommy I need a book to read.” As I looked at him sporting his shades and a band-aid on his knee trying his best to relax I noticed how his little fingers carefully turned the pages. I thought to myself I know he won’t particularly like me to capture this on film but it was such an on-the-spot adorable situation I wanted to save the moment. Eventually after a few years he saw the humor in it and we ended up having the photo enlarged and framed. It has been hanging in our guest bathroom ever since.

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” - Margaret Mead

Chance graduated with a degree in World Literature from Simon Fraser University in 2018. He is currently teaching English in Japan as well as he is gaining experience and knowledge living in another culture. His goal while in Japan is to become fluent in Japanese.
